Give as an Organization/ Company on Checkout

Overview

WeGive allows donors to make donations on behalf of a company or organization directly from a checkout form. When this feature is enabled, donors see a "Give as an Organization" checkbox on the checkout. Selecting it switches the form from collecting individual donor information to collecting organization/company details instead, and creates a separate Company Donor Profile tied to that donation.

Note on terminology: Donors see the label "Give as an Organization" on the checkout form. In the WeGive admin dashboard, this feature is referred to as "Company Donations" and donor profiles created this way are called Company Donor Profiles. Both terms refer to the same feature.

How to Enable Company Giving on a Checkout

Company giving is controlled per checkout using the Company Donations setting.

To enable it:

  1. Navigate to your checkout in the WeGive dashboard.

  2. Open the checkout editor and go to the Donation Rules section.

  3. Enable the Company Donations toggle.

  4. Save your checkout.

Once enabled, donors using that checkout will see the "Give as an Organization" option.

There is also a separate setting called Allow Additional Company Profiles that controls whether donors can create and manage more than one company/organization profile (e.g., if they donate on behalf of multiple businesses).

How It Works for Donors

Option A: Select "Give as an Organization" (New Donors)

When giving as a brand new donor, the checkout form displays a "Give as an Organization" checkbox. When they check this box, the form updates to collect organization-specific information instead of personal donor details.

After selecting the checkbox, donors are prompted to provide:

  • Organization/Company Name — The name of the business or organization making the donation.

  • Email — A contact email address for the organization.

  • Phone Number — A contact phone number for the organization.

  • Mailing Address — If the checkout is configured to collect addresses, the organization's mailing address will also be requested.

Option B: Add an Organization Account (Returning Donors)

If a donor already has an existing personal account, they can also give as an organization from the confirmation step of the checkout. They can click on their login, select "Create a new account", and then add their organization/company details. This creates a new organization-type account linked to their user.

Complete the Donation

The donor then proceeds through the rest of the checkout as normal — selecting an amount, choosing a fund (if applicable), entering payment information, and completing the donation.

What Happens Behind the Scenes

Separate Company Donor Profile

When a donor gives as an organization, WeGive creates a completely separate Company Donor Profile that is distinct from the donor's Personal (Individual) Donor Profile. This means:

  • The same person can have both an individual donor profile and one or more company donor profiles within the same organization.

  • Donations made as a company are tied to the Company Donor Profile, not the individual's personal profile.

  • The company profile stores the organization/company name in a single name field, rather than the first name / last name fields used for individual donors.

Receipts and Records

Donations made as an organization will reflect the organization name and contact information on receipts and transaction records, since the transaction is associated with the Company Donor Profile.

Managing Company Donor Profiles in the Dashboard

Company Donor Profiles appear in your donor list alongside individual donor profiles. You can distinguish them by:

  • The donor type indicator (company vs. individual).

  • The name field displaying the company name rather than a person's first and last name.

All transactions, recurring donations, and activity tied to the company profile are tracked separately from any individual profile the same person may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a donor have both a personal and organization profile?
Yes. A single user can maintain both an Individual Donor Profile and a separate Company Donor Profile within the same organization. They can toggle between giving as themselves or as their organization each time they donate.

Does this feature need to be enabled for every checkout?
Yes. Organization/company giving is a per-checkout setting. Enable Company Donations in the Donation Rules section for each checkout where you want to offer this option.

What if a donor has already given as an individual — can they later give as an organization?
Absolutely. If they are a new donor, they can check the "Give as an Organization" box. If they already have a personal account, they can add an organization account from the confirmation step by clicking their login and selecting "Create a new account." Their prior individual donations remain on their personal profile.

Can a donor manage multiple organization profiles?
Yes, if the Allow Additional Company Profiles setting is enabled on the checkout. This lets donors create and manage multiple organization/company profiles if they donate on behalf of different businesses.

Does organization giving work with recurring donations?
Yes. Donors can set up recurring donations as an organization. The recurring donation will be tied to the Company Donor Profile and processed accordingly.

Does organization giving work with campaigns and fundraisers?
Yes. Organization giving is fully supported on checkouts associated with campaigns, fundraisers, and campaign events.

Does organization giving work with PayPal?
No. PayPal donations do not currently support giving as an organization. Donations made via PayPal will always be associated with an individual donor profile. If organization giving is important for your donors, consider directing them to use credit card or ACH payment methods.

Does organization giving work with guest checkout?
Yes. Donors do not need to be logged in to give as an organization. The "Give as an Organization" checkbox is available during guest checkout, and WeGive will create (or match) the appropriate Company Donor Profile based on the organization details provided.

Where does the organization name appear?
The organization/company name appears on the donor profile, transaction records, and donation receipts in place of an individual's first and last name.

Is this feature available on event registration pages?
The "Give as an Organization" option is available on standard checkout forms. However, it is not currently available on the Ticket Registration Personal Details page for events. If you need to disable or enable it in specific contexts, reach out to support.
