Company Donors Showing FNU/LNU Names

Last updated: March 27, 2026

Symptoms

Company or organization donor records in Virtuous are showing "FNU" (First Name Unknown) or "LNU" (Last Name Unknown) as the contact individual's name.

Root Cause

Virtuous requires every organization contact to have at least one contact individual, which is a person associated with the company. When WeGive syncs a company donor to Virtuous and the donor record doesn't have a contact person's first and last name, Virtuous inserts placeholder values: "FNU" for the first name and "LNU" for the last name.

This is standard Virtuous behavior, not a bug. It happens when company donors in WeGive were created without filling in the contact person details.

Examples

Complete record (no issues). A company donor in WeGive has the company name "Acme Corporation," a contact person named John Smith, and the email john.smith@acmecorp.com. When this syncs to Virtuous, the organization record is created with a properly identified contact individual. The contact's name, email, and phone are all populated correctly. Virtuous can match this contact on future syncs without issues.

Missing all contact info. A company donor in WeGive has the company name "Generic Business LLC" but no first name, last name, email, or phone for a contact person. When this syncs, Virtuous creates the organization record but fills in "FNU LNU" as the contact individual. There is no email or phone on the record. This causes problems because Virtuous has very little to match on for future syncs, which can lead to duplicate records being created. Your team also won't be able to send communications to this contact from Virtuous.

Name but no email. A company donor has the company name "Main Street Foundation" and a contact person named Sarah Johnson, but no email or phone. When this syncs, Virtuous creates the organization with Sarah Johnson as the contact individual, which is better than FNU/LNU. However, without an email address, Virtuous has less to match on for future syncs and the contact won't receive email communications. Adding an email whenever possible is recommended.

Why This Matters

Beyond messy data, FNU/LNU records create practical problems. Virtuous tries to match incoming data to existing contacts on future syncs. A record with no email and a placeholder name has very little to match on, which can lead to duplicate records being created instead of updating the existing one. If you have dozens or hundreds of company donors with incomplete data, this becomes a significant cleanup effort after the fact.

How to Resolve

Step 1: Update the Company Donor in WeGive

For each company donor showing FNU/LNU in Virtuous, update the record in WeGive with the actual contact person's information:

  1. In WeGive, find the company donor record

  2. Add the contact person's first name and last name

  3. Save the record

WeGive will push the updated contact individual information to Virtuous on the next sync. The FNU/LNU placeholder names will be replaced with the real names.

Step 2: Verify in Virtuous

After the next sync cycle (real-time for push updates), check the contact in Virtuous to confirm the placeholder names have been replaced.

Prevention

Before enabling the integration or importing company donors, make sure every company donor record in WeGive includes a contact person's first and last name. This ensures Virtuous receives complete data and doesn't need to insert placeholders.

If you're importing company donors from a CSV file, include the contact person's name fields in your import. See Migrating Your Historical Data for import requirements.
