Event Payments and Tax Deductibility
Last updated: February 25, 2026
Event ticket payments are processed through WeGive's standard payment infrastructure but are classified differently from donations for tax purposes.
How Event Payments Are Classified
Ticket payments are recorded as service revenue, not charitable gifts. This means:
They appear in the transaction ledger as event revenue
They are not issued a donation receipt by default
They are not included in year-end giving statements
Add-on donations made during registration are recorded as standard gifts and are tax-deductible in the normal way.
Configuring Tax Deductibility
If a portion of a ticket price is tax-deductible (e.g., a gala ticket where part of the price is a donation), this must be handled manually outside of WeGive. WeGive does not currently support splitting a ticket payment into a service revenue portion and a deductible donation portion automatically.
Receipts
Ticket purchasers receive a registration confirmation email, not a donation receipt. If an organization needs to provide a receipt for a ticket purchase, it must be generated outside of WeGive.
⚠ Things to Watch For
Do not use event tickets as a workaround for collecting donations — the funds will be classified as service revenue and will not appear in giving histories or reports.
Add-on donations during registration are separate transactions and will generate a receipt if the organization has donation receipts enabled.
