Why is an offline recurring plan reactivated after a donor updated their payment method
Last updated: May 21, 2026
If you see an offline recurring plan suddenly become Active again after the donor added or saved a new card, the plan did not reactivate on its own. The donor was shown a confirmation prompt in the donor portal and selected the option to apply the new card to their recurring plan. This article explains the two prompts donors see, what each option does, and how to audit or roll back the change.
How an offline recurring plan becomes active again
An offline recurring plan is a plan with no payment method assigned to it (shown as Missing status in the dashboard). The only way for that plan to move back to Active is for a payment method to be assigned to it specifically. Adding a card to the donor's profile does not, on its own, attach that card to any existing recurring plan. The system always asks the donor first.
There are two places in the donor portal where the donor is asked, and either one can result in the plan reactivating.
Prompt 1: When a donor adds a new payment method to their profile
When a donor adds a new card to Saved Payment Methods on their profile, and they have at least one offline recurring plan, they immediately see a modal:
Message: Do you want to use this payment method for your automated and recurring payments?
Buttons: No, do not update and Yes, update future payments
Outcomes:
Donor selection | What happens |
Yes, update future payments | The new card is attached to the donor's offline recurring plan(s) and the plan(s) move back to Active. The next scheduled charge runs on its existing date. |
No, do not update | The card is saved to the donor's profile only. The recurring plan stays offline. |
Prompt 2: When a donor visits their profile with an offline recurring plan
Any time a donor lands on their profile page and has a recurring plan without a payment method assigned, they see a modal automatically:
Title: Oops! You are missing a payment method.
Message: You are currently missing a payment method on your recurring plan, please click here to confirm your payment method.
Buttons: Do This Later and Confirm My Payment Method
Outcomes:
Donor selection | What happens |
Confirm My Payment Method | The donor is taken into a multi-step flow to assign a payment method to a recurring plan (see below). The plan only moves to Active after the donor completes every step. |
Do This Later | The modal closes. The plan stays offline. The donor will see the modal again the next time they visit the profile. |
What the donor sees after selecting Confirm My Payment Method:
If the donor has more than one recurring plan, they are first asked to select which plan they want to update.
If the donor has only one recurring plan, they skip the plan selection step.
Either way, the donor is then taken to a review screen showing the proposed changes, selects (or confirms) the payment method to use, clicks Next, and then clicks Confirm Edits to finalize.
Because this flow requires the donor to make explicit selections and confirm twice, accidental reactivations through Prompt 2 are unlikely. Most surprise reactivations come from Prompt 1 above, where a single tap on Yes, update future payments is all that is needed.
Why this looks like an auto-resume
Prompt 1 is the most common source of surprise reactivations. It is a single modal with a single tap (Yes, update future payments) that immediately attaches the new card to the donor's offline plan(s). A donor who is moving quickly can accept it without realizing what they are agreeing to, and from your side it looks like the plan reactivated on its own. Prompt 2 requires the donor to complete a multi-step review and confirm twice, so it rarely produces accidental reactivations. In every case, there is a recorded donor action behind the change.
How to confirm what happened
Open the recurring plan in the dashboard and check the Activity or audit log section on the plan. You will see entries for:
The payment method being attached to the plan
The plan status changing from Missing to Active
Those entries are timestamped and attributed to the donor's session, which confirms the donor approved the change.
How to roll back
If a donor did not intend to reactivate a recurring plan and asks the org to undo it:
Open the recurring plan record in the dashboard.
Remove the payment method to return it to an offline state or Cancel the plan.
If a charge has already processed against the new card and the donor wants it refunded, issue the refund on the transaction record.
Preventing accidental reactivations at scale
If your organization wants to clean up old offline recurring plans so donors are not prompted in the first place, run a report of recurring plans in Missing status that have been sitting for a defined period (for example, longer than 90 days) and pause or cancel them based on your re-engagement policy. Once a plan is paused or canceled, neither prompt will offer to apply a new card to it.
