Enabling Google Pay and Apple Pay in WeGive
Last updated: June 16, 2026
WeGive supports Google Pay and Apple Pay to give your donors a faster and more convenient checkout experience. To enable these payment methods, follow the steps below.
1. Connect Your Stripe Account
To use Google Pay and Apple Pay, you must connect your own Stripe account to WeGive.
Navigate to Settings > Payments in the WeGive dashboard.
Click Add Stripe Account and follow the prompts to connect your Stripe account.
Note: WeGive requires your organization to provide its own Stripe account for these payment methods to work.
2. Enable Google Pay and Apple Pay on Your Checkout
Once Stripe is connected:
Go to the Checkout Element you want to update.
Under Payment Methods, toggle Google Pay and Apple Pay on.
Save your changes.
These options will now be available to donors who meet the device and browser requirements.
3. When Apple Pay and Google Pay Appear
Apple Pay and Google Pay are "digital wallet" options that only show on the checkout page when certain conditions are met. If any condition is not met, the button simply will not appear.
Apple Pay
For the Apple Pay button to appear, all of the following must be true:
Supported Apple device. On iPhone and iPad, Apple Pay works in any browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge, and so on), because all iOS browsers use Apple's underlying engine. On a Mac, use Safari. Other desktop browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) only support Apple Pay through an extra "scan the code with your iPhone" step, and Firefox support is inconsistent.
A valid card in Apple Wallet. The donor must have at least one eligible card saved to Apple Wallet on the device they are using.
No payment method already saved to their Donor Profile. If the donor is signed in and already has a payment method on file, Apple Pay will not appear (see "Why a saved card hides the wallet options" below).
Google Pay
For the Google Pay button to appear, all of the following must be true:
A supported browser and device. Google Pay works across modern browsers on both desktop and mobile, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Chrome is the most reliable, and on an Android device a donor must be on Chrome 59 or later with up-to-date Google Play services. The page must also be served over a secure (HTTPS) connection, which our checkout always is.
A valid card in Google Wallet. The donor must have at least one eligible card saved to Google Wallet.
No payment method already saved to their Donor Profile. As with Apple Pay, if the donor already has a payment method on file, Google Pay will not appear.
Why a saved card hides the wallet options
This is the most common question we get, so here is the reasoning:
We always default to a donor's saved payment method to keep checkout fast and frictionless. The entire purpose of storing a payment method is to let returning donors give again in one or two taps without re-entering any details. If we also displayed Apple Pay or Google Pay next to that saved card, we would be adding an extra decision ("which one do I use?") at the most sensitive moment of checkout, which is exactly where donors tend to drop off.
So when a returning donor already has a verified method on file, we use it automatically instead of prompting them to pick a wallet. Apple Pay and Google Pay are designed to help new donors check out quickly without typing card details, which is why they appear for donors who do not yet have a method saved.
To use a wallet instead of a saved card, the donor can remove the saved payment method from their Donor Profile, or check out as a new/guest donor.
